Just a short trip from Lisbon, Sintra-Cascais Natural Park is one of the best areas for a full-day hiking adventure. Trails wind through dense woodland, past dramatic cliffs and historic landmarks, with routes connecting places such as Sintra, Cabo da Roca and the Atlantic coastline. The landscape changes constantly, from mysterious forest and granite formations to spectacular ocean views. It is ideal if you want a hike that feels much wilder and more adventurous than being in the city.

Serra da Arrábida

Around an hour south of Lisbon, Arrábida Natural Park offers some of Portugal's most spectacular coastal hiking. The mountains rise dramatically above the Atlantic, creating trails with panoramic views over turquoise water, secluded beaches and forest-covered hills. One of the highlights is hiking around the Portinho da Arrábida area, where you can combine a mountain walk with a swim or relaxing afternoon by the coast. It's a fantastic choice for a summer adventure.
Rota dos Moinhos – Monsanto

Difficulty: Easy to Moderate
You don't actually need to leave Lisbon to find a proper hiking adventure. Monsanto Forest Park, often called Lisbon's "green lung," covers a huge area of woodland on the western side of the city. There are numerous trails through pine and eucalyptus forests, with viewpoints overlooking Lisbon and the Tagus River. The terrain is varied enough to make it feel like a countryside escape while remaining accessible by public transport. It's particularly good for a shorter hike when you don't want to spend hours travelling outside the city.
Cabo da Roca to Praia da Ursa
For something more dramatic, head west to Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of mainland continental Europe, and follow the trails towards Praia da Ursa. The route takes you along rugged Atlantic cliffs with enormous rock formations rising from the ocean below.
Praia da Ursa itself is a spectacular and relatively wild beach, although reaching it involves a steep descent and the return journey is demanding. This is one for hikers who want big views, wild coastline and a genuine sense of adventure.
